Punishment drills
Work camp Gleiwitz, Camp for forced labor
mei – december 1944
The SS were the only ones allowed to beat us, and they beat us savagely.
Members of the SA or SS carried out a reign of terror, but their approach was chaotic and not very efficient. It was Theodor Ecke, the camp commander of Dachau and later concentration camp inspector, who organized the entire system of disciplinary measures and punishment in an efficient way. He set down this system in a charter with the title ‘Disziplinar- und Strafordnung für das Gefangenenlager’. These guidelines were worked out in Dachau and were soon introduced in all the concentration camps.
