Max Hartogson

Work camp Gleiwitz, Camp for forced labor
1943

Max gilde weken van de pijn. Eindelijk had de Lagerführer gezegd ‘je mag zijn arm afsnijden’.

Becoming ill in a camp was an instant disaster. Many prisoners often became ill right away because they came into surroundings filled with misery and horrible situations. The treatment of prisoners varied considerably from camp to camp. Even the doctors mistreated patients and did not hesitate to give a patient a lethal injection. There was a lot of fiddling with the reports about the sick and the dead. The nursing staff in the sick barracks often lacked the necessary knowledge and acted as they saw fit. The nursing staff often consisted of the prisoners themselves.
