Until May 1944, work camp Gleiwitz was an Organisation Todt camp (OT camp). In May 1944, the work camp of the Deutsche GasRusswerke, Gleiwitz II, with more than 1,000 prisoners, became a subcamp of Auschwitz and in this way fell under the command of the SS.
