Before the war broke out, camp guards were usually recruited from the Totenkopfverbände, a special unit of the SS. A large number of the former SS guards were replaced by Lithuanian and Ukrainian volunteers, but wounded Waffen SS members or older SS members were also appointed as camp guards.
