Radio was the principal mass medium during the war years. In Germany the radio played an essential role in Nazi propaganda. As soon as Hilversum [broadcasting center of the Netherlands] was occupied, Dutch radio was also placed under German control. In January 1941 the broadcast corporations were replaced by one single state owned broadcasting system managed by the NSB [Dutch National Socialist party].
