Deepening the canal

Camp Conrad Rouveen
28 april – 9 augustus 1942

Just like the barge haulers of the Volga we had to pull the loaded barges. We were the horses.

The Jewish workers were assigned to the crew that had to enlarge and deepen the Conrad canal. The dredgings went on a flat barge. The men pulled the vessel for two hours, in the direction of Zwartsluis. They worked from 7-12 and from 12:25-5:00 with two fifteen-minute breaks. The fear and worries that the anti-Jewish regulations brought with them also affected the villagers.
