Coenraad Rood was born on 12 August 1917 in a poor Jewish neighborhood of Amsterdam, the son of Hartog Aaron Rood and Marianna Rood.

In addition to Coen, there were three boys and two girls in the non-Orthodox Jewish family:  Aaron, Maria, Jonas, Machiel, and Elisabeth (Liesje).
