Military service

Isaac Gans arranged that I didn’t have to go into military service. I became a nurse.
From 1811 until mid-1996 every man in the Netherlands had to fulfill his military service obligation. Conscripts had to register when they were around 18 years old. Every year the local authorities registered men who qualified for the National Armed Forces or military service. Selection for the service was determined by lots. The military board checked the requests for exemption because of physical ailments or a brother’s military service.
