Digging a tunnel to the crematorium

Flossenbürg concentration camp
9 februari -20 maart 1945

I heard whoosh, whoosh, and those were the bodies that slid to the crematorium on the plank above me.

The crematorium was located in the valley behind the camp and was not immediately visible for the prisoners. It is estimated that 1,500 death sentences were carried out between April 1944 and April 1945. For this purpose six new gallows were set up. During the last months there were more death sentences than the crematorium could handle.

That is why the SS had the bodies stacked up in piles and then burned. The death sentences weren’t the only cause of the extra burning of bodies; more often malnutrition, excessive work, and diseases took their toll as well.
