Many German soldiers were made prisoners of war. In general the treatment of German soldiers who fell into the hand of the Western Allies was according to international law. In most cases there was decent care and housing. Nevertheless the violation of the rules increased toward the end of the war, mostly as a result of people finding out about the Nazi crimes.
