When the American armed forces approached Kaufering at the end of April, the SS started to evacuate the camps. Prisoners were forced on death marches in the direction of Dachau. Prisoners who couldn’t keep us were shot dead or beaten to death by the guards. When the American troops entered Kaufering, they found 360 dead prisoners, among them the still smoldering corpses of 86 prisoners who were killed by the flames of their quarters that were set afire by the SS.
